Crusader Plume the Spamslayer

Alrite already.

A typical Saturday. Most of my days are typical. I should try and break some routines once in a while. Instead of doing everything the same way all the time. Tomorrow I'll wear my pants as a shirt and my shirt as pants. Oh yeah. That'll shake things up.

A nice and relaxed day. Perfectly weekended. There should be more like these. I played around with the unused maps in u9 ascension. Fascinating stuff. Glimpses of the game that could have been. I wish I could get my old old computer running. So I could play around with the old ultima games. Oh well. When is U10: Odyssey coming out anyway?

X marks the spot.

Here's a suggestion: if you try to go to my guestbook (or anyone else's for that matter) and it times out or it gives you an "oops you can't sign again" messeage even though you haven't signed any other books recently, then email help@diaryland.com and tell Andrew about it. Maybe if enough people does it he'll sit up and take notice. And we won't have to punch him then.

You could also submit a dland tech help request. Even though signmyguestbook is now a pay service there seems to be no tech help for it. Other than help@signmyguestbook.com. Which I did email once. But got no reply.

I just submitted a tech request.

May I suggest doing some work on signmyguestbook.com? I consider it to be a part of the diaryland family, but even though it is now a pay service there is no tech help for it as far as I can see. For a long time it has been working really badly. It times out a lot. Both when viewing and signing. Must be server problems. I am not the only one experiencing these problems. If you aren't planning to get it to work properly then it would be more honest to just shut it down. Fair is fair.

Also having flood control on a general level of all guestbooks is just plain wrong, there's no way guestbook spamming is a big enough problem to justify such a severe implementation. Imagine if you had a spamcop program for your email that removed 100% of the spam but also 5% of your important normal email, would you want that? The flood control may eliminate some spam but what's the point when it prevents a lot of people from signing the guestbooks they want to sign? The flood control should only work for each individual guestbook, this is common sense. I am not the only one who thinks so. I repeatedly have people telling me that they tried to sign my guestbook but they couldn't even though they hadn't signed any other guestbooks all day.

Thank you for listening.

This is my new crusade. I will pester Andrew until he deletes my diary or does something about it. The stakes are high my friend.

I don't know if they even read tech requests anymore though. Remember my blank page diary problem? Well, it was fixed... but my tech requests for it are still listed as "This request is still in the support queue and has not been answered yet". And those were 11 days ago. So I wonder if the problem just fixed itself or if they actually looked at it.

Speaking of guestbook spam.. you know how you're not supposed to respond to spammers? Well, I was bored. So I clicked on the link in a guestbook spam I got. This one:

name: James
url: http://store.fascinatedeals.com
message:
This site is not that bad it is actually a real public diary. I actually feel like making one of my own now. Kind of Cool.
date: 1:38 am - Friday,October 17, 2003

(I had to refresh my guestbook about 10-15 times before it showed up so I could copy this.)

It's one of the better spams. If it wasn't for the link to the commercial website it would look almost like a real guestbook signing. But I had it figured out. Anyway, I visited the site for some reason. Bored bored bored. And I noticed it had the yahoo logo on it. The store is hosted by stores.yahoo.com. Normally there would be no point in argueing with spammers but I figured just for the heck of it I'd email the webmaster of the site and ask if I should report them to yahoo. And the very next day...

Re: important question

Hello we want to Apologize for the link that we
placed in your guestbook. We have checked with Yahoo
about signing guestbooks and technically it is not
considered spam but we will reconsider our tactics as
you said we have realized that it is annoying to the
owners of the guest books. We did not mean to offend
you in any way as you can see our website is family
friendly. Sorry for any inconvenience that we may have
caused to you.

Now how about that? I singlehandedly took the total amount of spammers in the world down by one site. At least I'll keep believing that. Andrew should hire me to deal with guestbook spam instead of that hideous flood control.

Hehe.

Oh and Desiree please do try adaware like I said. I really think it'll do you right.

Right. I'm off to see the queen about a horse. Nitey nite.
